Okay, so I didn't go to the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear on Saturday, and I'm glad I didn't. According to all news reports I've seen, the Metro was out of control with humongous lines, packed trains and yuppie-eating escalators. I almost lost it dodging the slowest walkers on earth and waiting in line in the dreaded Kingstowne Wal-Mart on Saturday afternoon, so I couldn't even fathom the insanity of the wait at stations near the Mall.
I've seen the Roots twice in concert anyway, so no biggie.
The biggest disappointment of the weekend was not being able to find a cheap red wig to go with my bright orange L.A. County Jail cutoff shirt and leather skirt. Yes, I was going to be a Black Lindsay, but changed my mind after having a really long day and being exhausted by moving boxes around in my storage unit. I've got an amazing taupe sofa to sell. Any takers?
The highlight of the weekend was taking advantage of the perfect fall day on Sunday and reading the first two chapters of Terry McMillan's new book, Getting to Happy, on a beach towel in the park. So far, it's witty and insightful, but a little depressing. The update on Savannah and Robin's stories reinforced my belief that you have to get focused and get your sh*t together (man-wise and career-wise) early in your 30s, or you'll be dealing with the consequences of your indecisiveness well into middle age. Hopefully, the book will end lighter than it started. Watch for my review.

I Hate Crowds, But...
I am torn about the prospect of attending the "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear."
As I've mentioned before, I hate crowds. Although I would love to see the Roots for free at noon (allegedly) on Saturday, will it be worth the overloaded Metro trains, wading through the masses on the Mall, competing for a decent view of the stage and screens, and just the general annoyance of sharing space with 100,000 other people?
I'm also not one of the die-hard Stewart and Colbert fans, and see no need to attend and further inflate their egos...I'll give you an update on my mood on Friday.

Things I'm Looking Forward to...
In no particular order:
1. Cuba Libre in Penn Quarter. Yes, it's coming to D.C., and I may have just run out of reasons to go to Philly. I'm a big fan: Dancing, great drinks, fabulous brunch. Please export them all here. The opening date keeps getting pushed back, but it may open next week. Stay tuned.
2. Esperanza Spalding at Lincoln Theatre - Oct. 3. Love her and her amazing 'fro. She is reinventing jazz, and has some excellent samba and bossa nova-influenced numbers.
3. Alice Walker at Busboys (14th and V NW) - Oct. 2. Although I won't be there--it will cost you a pretty penny just to be in the room--I definitely had to give it a mention.
4. Boris Kodjoe on "Undercovers," NBC, Wednesday. I don't even have to explain, because you know.
5. Vanessa Williams on "Desperate Housewives." I haven't actively watched this show since the tornado. Or was it the plane crash? Whatever. It really doesn't matter. They may win me back if Ms. Williams brings some much-needed flavor to Wisteria Lane.
6. DC Fashion Week, Sept. 20-26. Various locations. Support local artistes.

7. Soul Train Happy Hour at U St. Music Hall, this Fri., 5 PM. I don't even know what to expect, but since it's at USMH, I bet it will be a stone gas, honey. (snort, snort) Don't make me unleash my 'fro.
8. (sorta-kinda) The Roots' new collabo with John Legend. Can't say that I'm a fan of John Legend (Howzabout Anthony Hamilton? Or D.C.'s own Raheem DeVaughn? Why not dig up crazy-a$$ D'Angelo? Or crazy-a$$ to the extreme K-Ci? Call me a traitor to the race, but I would even rather see Robin Thicke cut this CD. ANYBODY BUT John Legend...), but their take on a number of soul classics should be interesting.
That's it for now. I'll do my best to post something of real substance tomorrow.
