Afrobeat Bonanza!

Afrobeat is on everyone's radar now, due to the amazing success of Fela! on Broadway, creative hip-hop samples, and its appropriation by indie bands.

If you aren't familiar with some of its more modern forms, this is a good weekend for a city-wide class in Modern Afrobeat 101.

Femi Kuti (Fela's son, who is a great artist in his own right) brings his band to the 9:30 Club for a late show on Saturday.

Then, there are at least two parties billing themselves as the "official" after-party.

My guess on the one with the most authentic grooves: The after-party at Dodge City hosted by Knitting Factory Records (Mr. Kuti's label), which will definitely have the afrobeat jams spinning.

If you don't want to sweat your 'do out before Easter, there's the BYT/ESL after-party on the W Hotel's swanky rooftop.  Warning: Good luck getting in, even with an RSVP, dahling.  It's first-come, first-served.
